SHOW the Naysayers

Immigration: it’s the hot issue in politics. Americans have been hearing about “reform” and “immigration” more and more, and the term “elephant in the room” has been thrown around far too many times. Let’s face it, does any political party have the guts to take on this issue? I mean, REALLY tackle it. Let’s remember that politicians are regular people who want to keep their jobs; yes, “progress” is good, but too much progress or change is political suicide. America knows the elephant is in the living room, but since the TV can still be seen from the other side of the room, will America take the time to do something about it?

I’ve been struggling with myself a lot lately. I’ve comprehensively read both sides of the story, and I can’t help but to agree with some of the opposition’s points. It makes me cringe, but it’s true. The opposition takes pride in portraying illegal immigrants as gang members, lowlifes, and ungrateful, ignorant flag-burners (easy YouTube search will prove this).

With that being said, I want to make a clear differential. The people who are advocating the DREAM ACT and the people who will benefit from it are a DIFFERENT group of immigrants. We are in this country for the right reasons: we want to work hard, get an education, and better our societies. Not even the harshest of critics will turn away an immigrant who abides by the law, works to better our society, and sees education as a way to a better life.

Dear Dreamers, remember that we have come to America as guests. We’ve all had different reasons for coming to this beautiful mansion that is America. We have to show that we are worthy, respectable guests in order to prove our point that we should stay in this mansion. Let the impolite, rude guests be kicked off, but you have to remember you are to be the best possible guest you can be and that every bad move you make will be scrutinized by the people who want you to leave.

DIFFERENTIATE yourself from the immigrants that are giving us a bad name and hurting our cause. Show America that we are not gang-members or criminals. Show America how we can improve this mansion, how we can enrich the lives of its inhabitants. By doing so, you will be the driving force behind this cause. Give us a good name, and then politicians won’t be afraid to back us up. Make America notice us, make them know they need us, make the media have nothing negative to portray, and then America will finally do something about that dang elephant.

On my next blog post: I will discuss how the DREAM Act could lessen the internal problem of gangs and poverty in the undocumented community. The DREAM Act can solve the “problems of immigration” that the opponents so strongly stand by.

Keep on DREAMING,

AGENT A.M.
