There is something that seems to get lost within the constant argument about whether CIR/DREAM Act should be introduced or not... This, in my opinion, is so much more important than education. It is about family!
I have recently met a young lady who has made me realize some of the reasons CIR is so critical for us as human beings. She lives here with one parent while the rest of her family is overseas. She is constantly sad, crying and fighting with herself.
She has to make a choice everyday: Education or family?
The United states provides us with free, quality, education all the way until we graduate high school. This is where many undocumented students have to make a decision to continue to wait it out or return to a place they rarely know. This is my friend's dilemma. She misses her family dearly, all her siblings, aunts, cousins, etc... She also knows that she will probably be limited to working low-wage jobs in her country of origin.
It's a hidden curse that we, undocumented students, deal with everyday. We are able to succeed, achieve and be the best up to a certain level. We then are allowed to drop slowly. This is the dilemma that has to be erased from our lives. I know we all want to make it and become someone in this world, but giving up our families is the price we pay.
Families are also SEPARATED everyday. In fact, as I type this, an American citizen just lost his mother or father to the broken Immigration system...
Think about it.
We are talent.
We are part of the future.
