Congressional Liaison Report | 02/26/2010

Congress is back in session and it's been very busy over at the hill. I personally haven't had the chance to attend any briefings or even read anything regarding immigration or the DREAM Act because there was just so much going on in my office, but I did get to attend a screening of the documentary Papers which i thought did a great job showing what Latino/a students have to go through when they graduate from high school.
I don't know what it's like to be in your position, but I care about those whose voices are not being heard and this is why I'm here and why I choose to write about the DREAM Act (or more like why the DREAM Act chose me). I believe that education should not be a privilege, but a right. I come from Colombia where this is not the case, and I consider the lack of access to education our biggest flaw and our most expensive mistake. My fear is that the American public does not realize the enormous cost of the lack of education, because they are so fixated on the immediate expenses. Everyone of you who works hard should not be stopped or turned away because of a decision that was not yours to make.
My hope is that no matter what happens this year, whether immigration is brought forth or not on the floor, we keep fighting and demonstrating that we are not hindering this country, but that we are an asset. Whichever party chooses to stand up for what is right will find in our generation an ally and a vote. If our efforts are not in vain, then their party's won't be either. We are a big part of America's future and just because we don't have a vote, doesn't mean we can't change the course of history. Keep it up guys!
