WASHINGTON STATE DEMOCRATIC PARTY CALLS ON PRESIDENT OBAMA TO STOP DEPORTATIONS
Washington
State Democratic Convention adopts resolution urging the President to
expand deferred action program and halt unjust deportations separating
immigrant families
SPOKANE,
WA- During the Washington State Democratic Convention, the Party
unanimously approved a resolution calling on President Barack Obama to
use the full extent of his executive authority to stop the deportations
of non-criminal immigrants, most especially the family members of U.S.
Citizens, Legal Permanent Residents and Dreamers. The resolution also
called for an expansion of the successful Deferred Action for Childhood
Arrivals (DACA) program to immigrant families and deserving immigrants
who would otherwise benefit from a comprehensive reform bill.
This
bold action by the Washington State Democratic Party comes on the heels
of a letter urging the President to take similar action co-authored by
Congresswoman Suzan DelBene, co-signed by 57 other members of congress,
including all Democratic House members from Washington State.
Both
efforts came as result of relentless advocacy from the Washington Dream
Act Coalition (WDAC), a collective of undocumented youth in the state
who recently won in-state financial aid eligibility but have clearly
made a strong pivot to the record deportations putting them at risk of
being separated from their DACA ineligible parents and family members.
Moses
Chege, Director of Policy and Advocacy for the WDAC had this to say,
“We’re encouraged to see that Washington Democrats are no longer
accepting inaction from House Republicans, but are instead joining
Dreamers to demand the President take immediate executive action to lift
the threat of deportation from deserving families.”
