I was recently interviewed in a radio talk show where I was told that there are some protective parents out there complaining on how their kids, who are American Citizens with good grades, can't get into a University and yet somebody who is in the country "illegally" does get in. I was asked what I would say when I hear people complain about that?
Well first I can certainly tell that I don't think Universities discriminate against American citizens neither they prefer to have undocumented students in their institutions.
I don't know if you have noticed yet but I refer my situation as undocumented and not "illegal" because it is just simply rude to do so, taking in consideration what I wrote in my last post.
Anyways moving back to the question about the protective parents complaining, I would like bring up a topic; Competition. The meaning of competition is: a contest between individuals or groups.
It has come to my attention that there are parents out there who don't have any sympathy on my case because their kids didn't get in the UW, and yet me that I am undocumented did. A narrow minded thinking process that concludes with the idea that I took their spot. Even though it is true that competition plays a very important role in this country, it is not a good mentality to succeed and this is why the ones who don't understand this keep wasting their energy comparing and envying others.
The reason competition is not a good mentality to succeed is because it is based on thinking that there is not enough for everybody so we have to compete and fight to get things. This type of thinking only leads you to more people and circumstances to compete against you.
Now instead of competing all the time you can become a creative mind, focus on your dreams, your visions, and take all competition out of the equation. As an immigrant who had to go to a new school in another language when I was 14, this type of mentality has lead me to overcome all the odds and challenges that come with being an undocumented student in the United States.
This being said, I would tell all those protective parents out there to share this knowledge with their kids, so you and them, because of you, don't have to worry about competing with anyone anymore. It is in these difficult economic times where in order to succeed we need as many as possible to think, see, feel, and believe that there is plenty for everyone and where no thought of limitation should enter anyone's mind if they ACT from it.
